You Are Indelibly Persistent by Ken HarnischSee, the best thing would be
To pretend you never existed
And that my misplaced affections
Were boyhood mistakes for
Which I’ve long atoned.
Then, having scrubbed you from
My life I could go on and know
The roads I took after yours
Were righteous and sound;
The on-ramp to a happy destiny.
I would think of you from time to time
As some scuttled boat from which
I was glad to make a fortuitous escape.
I would cherish what I have, not mourn
What I couldn’t and never wanted anyway.
Brave words for a liar, I’m thinking now
The cleanser I’m using to expunge your
Memory not doing its job, nor is your
Image graying with the march of time.
Damn, but you are indelibly persistent!
Call me sometime. Tell me I’m a clown.
Berate me. Tell me you stopped
Caring two days before you showed
Me the door. I might even begin
To believe then you never loved me.
Sad to say it wouldn’t matter, and that
It’ll never stop me from loving you.

As some scuttled boat from which
I was glad to make a fortuitous escape. |
