Sun-Chaser

by Caitlin Schwartz

On a stormy night
I packed my bags and ran away.
I left behind this arid land I tried to call home
Without a second glance.
I climbed mountains and hills
Crossed valleys and streams
But I found myself no closer
To my end destination.
I was a sun-chaser,
Ravenous for a ray of warmth
To shine on my face.
All these years of frost and chill
Had done me no good
I felt hollow, frigid and lost,
As though I had misplaced my
Grand purpose.
Where could it be hiding?
Somewhere near the sun,
I knew.
I would say I walked the beaten path,
But there was no path to be seen.
I carved my own
In the grasses and soil,
Laid down a road of my hopes and dreams.
Though my bones are stiff,
My mouth dry,
And the bottoms of my feet now cut and scarred
I will not turn back.

I will fight another day.

I will find
My sun
and feel its beams
Penetrate
My soul.

Excellent spiritual poem, Caitlin. I like the determination in this one.
