Heavy Questions

by Caitlin Schwartz

What
How
Why—
These are the questions that plague my conscience

North
South
East
West—
I can’t even tell which way is up
And which way is down

Anger rips through my chest
Like a single bullet
Reverberating against my ribs
Before taking residence in my heart

Bitterness,
A single drop
Diluting
The purity of my youth.

What
How
Why
Will this pain ever lessen?

Great questions and the answers come gradually through many thoughtful poems like this one!

No reason given for the questions, no cause given for the pain. Leaves much for speculation. Feelings are directly stated.
