Open Arms
by Caitlin SchwartzWaves lap the shore
In repetition,
And return to sea
Each with the knowledge
They will never
See the sand again.
But the sun continues shining,
Oblivious. Its bright rays
Extending as far as
The eye can see,
Beyond the tops
Of the trees.
The green leaves
Turn to red
Then brown
And suddenly
They’re gone.
Playing a disappearing
Act,
Like
You.
Frost comes
With a vengeance
Flurry upon
Flurry
Creating piles
Of white in
A winter wonderland.
Then suddenly,
It’s gone.
Each snowflake,
Melted,
Its beauty erased.
The ground defrosts
And the first green life
Emerges.
Flowers bloom,
The robin’s song
Echoes through the hills.
And here I stand,
The slight breeze
Whips through my hair
Whispering secrets
That leave a smile
On my face.
A new day will dawn.
A new day will dawn,
And I will be here
To greet it
With open arms.
