Makahiku

by Uriel Tovar

With a bottle and a half of water
I didn’t know what I was getting into
Because two miles on an even plane
Is not equal to a two mile sharp incline
With three hundred and fifty pounds of baggage
Easy to moderate difficulty
On whose judgment?
With growing rage because this
Hike could have been
Ice cold dips under fresh watered falls
Dripping on my tired back
I continue with much needed motivation
Hand holding and weight tugging
Until breathless heaves turned into
Breathless sights
Breaking through the thick forest
With a moment of lucidity
Love and grandeur
A few moments of awe
At the greatness of it all.
