Thoughts while reviewing 401k balances by Uriel Tovar65 years with a max of maybe 92
Start with work at 18 maybe younger
This gives us an estimated total of 47 working years
Not including weekends and holidays
If, of course, we aren’t carrying a second job
And of course we might also include
The kids’ soccer games
Recitals, talent shows, movies with the friends
Restless nights when they’re at the dance
I’d say 47 years is a good average
And after all that work we’re only given
About 10 years to really enjoy the fruit
Which our efforts have wrought
To stretch our now saggy and soft muscles
To the cracking of our arthritic bones
To sit in a creaky rocking chair and ask
If it was truly worth it
And to know that we will have our grandchildren
Running, jumping on our laps
And squeezing what little breath is left
In us as the sun sets
On our humble homes.

| Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 01/18/13 at 01:32 AM Brilliant piece of work, about work, and the ageing process, and the effect one has on the other. I can strongly relate to this, as I am one of the lucky ones, retiring in June. Meanwhile, my job is killing me. |
| Posted by George Hoerner on 01/18/13 at 03:52 PM Someone just offered me a 'buy-out' of my retirement package. After consideralbe thought I believe they think I'm already dead. And so I might be. So I'll take it and run for my life or what is left of it. See you all on some road trip! Good write Uriel. |
