Love Him For That by Scott Utley
In various shades of suede stood Rex, King of the Goliaths. The Great Dane beauty had lived his
life according to the laws of God. Kilos of muscle, tendons and fierce intelligence griped the
cliffs to Heaven’s gate, and behind him, carrying a pail of lotus leaves galloped Alex. I loved
him for that. I saw a field of mandarin poppies bleed into the horizon. I saw both giants
laying dead as much as deathly hues could burnish, where the sky meets the raging sea. And then
dreams did weep along the mouth of the central coast as Big Sur cried throughout the night. The
Angels sighed as the ocean, lapping needling pines, did show such compassion that the rains did
come. I saw two giants lying there as eve dipped into the ink of night. And I loved them both
for that. Frosted magma did breach the shores where I lay crying and morning came without her
sirens and all was calm, when before mine eyes I surely saw a dream come forth upon the sky
and I loved God for that and I kissed the sky. When the sun dropped down behind God’s face, I
looked to where the Giants died. Where once they had supinely laid, were two giant Birds
of Paradise, and a raging sea, her eyes opened wide.
