the strangest stranger

by Vikki Owens

i knew you biblically,
so many years it was you and me
as two sea-sick children
in a salt-slicked land
hand-holding like a talisman
against the evil eye.

turned the eye on me
and found me lacking

now you are the strangest stranger i know,
the suffocating circle of the wedding band,
we werent nothing, and
now we are. and now im so tired of mentioning your name,
like a far away place i'll never see again,
you said we'd still be friends
but i guess you cant be friends once you've been lovers,
once its all over
theres nothing there to hold us together.
i dont even want you,
but the heart has an emptiness all its own,
and the crippled beating it does now
is a result
of running on stilts
to walk through all your bullshit.

i signed the papers,
change your number.
so you'll vanish.
