She Wanted So Much More by Ken HarnischNow old enough to understand
She wanted so much more
Not just the furtive couplings
Or the inarticulate heat
Although they had their
Moments in her fevered mind
She wanted the conversation
Too. The point of view the
Sisterhood could only cobble
From conversations they wished
They’d had, or books they read.
She wanted to know their denseness
Too. The mindless eye that turned
Necks to televisions to watch some
Moment in a football game and wonder
From where came those shouted huzzahs
She wanted the smell of a man upon
Her breast. His breath against her hair.
His lips curled against her neck. Most of all
She wanted one who would apologize
For the sins of his sex, lying like the
Sediment of ages in her soul
She would become a Jezebel
If needed. She saw her reflection in
A mirror and decided if it took
A smile, a shorter skirt, the wiles
Her mother had once laid
Indelicately upon her ear
Then she would use them all
I will, she murmured, become
The most comely of spiders;
Be the honey to bring the bees.
Now old enough to understand
She wanted so much more.
