Let Me Down Easy by Ken HarnischYou should have let me down easy
It would have made things
A whole lot better
And I wouldn’t be thinking of you
So many years later as
A bitch on wheels
Wondering about you
Only to the extent
I envision all the cruelties
Life must have visited on you
And thinking some Karma
Was at work which you
More than richly deserved.
Now, it could be you’ve led
A satisfying and sanguine life
But somehow, knowing
The acid in your soul,
I think you would have done
Your damndest to thwart
All good fortune that came
Your way.
I see you got divorced
And wonder if you wonder
What you could have done
To save that marriage before
You settled for number 2.
And I wonder if your present
Knows half of what you were
Back in the day
No, we all keep our secrets
Don’t we? We all have
This special kind of Lysol
We use to scrub the past
Away like mold on a bathroom wall.
And then we re-invent ourselves.
Morph into something placid and
So far removed from the wild
We can’t even remember how it was
When we began. So be it.
I’ve seen my share of hellcats
Who turned into housewives.
And now you’re in a place where your past
Can never walk up to you
And bite you on the ass.
I envy your escape
While thinking
That karma is not quite through with you
Or maybe I just believe in
Keeping hope alive
Don’t get me wrong, darling:
I’m not bitter.
Well, kinda sorta not.
I believe in redemption
And rebirth and even reincarnation
In a way. So I’m thinking,
If there’s really a second life
In us, and we should happen to meet
In the year 2525, it would be in your best
Interests, next time,
To let me down easy.

| Posted by Kristine Briese on 11/18/11 at 05:01 PM Ohhh, a bit more caustic than we're used to seeing from you. Very effective! I love the thought of our own personal Lysol, and "hellcats that turned into housewives" has a nice little rhythm. Good piece, Ken, as always. |
| Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 12/05/11 at 03:31 PM Anger and frustration well directed Ken. Despite some stinging words here, I think you've let her off easy as well. 2525 ain't that far way. :o) |
