Those Who Loved to Dance by Ken HarnischLooking at the lines in the glass
I rued the thought I might be
Called on to perform on a stage
Where my best roles were
Played with actresses who
Were not named Anne.
I was lauded several times
And got rave reviews
Disguised as flowers
And invitations to chalets
In distant mountain towns
That never knew a cell phone
And yes, the taste of honey
On a thigh still calls to me
In ways the priesthood
Never could. I sinned
Enough to keep
Myself out of the seminary
But never enough so I
Could be convicted
Of hypocrisy
I left calling cards
That years later
Are still lifted to dimpled noses
And because I wonder
Where they are
They wonder back
Sometimes, I imagine
Assignations which would
Seem fantastic to any but
A thespian who knew his lines
And all his leading ladies well.
Especially those who loved to dance.

| Posted by Alison McKenzie on 07/29/11 at 01:39 PM How did I miss this audition? My AGENT! Incompetent bumble berry, that one! Seriously though, "And because I wonder where they are they wonder back" is golden!

| Posted by Kristine Briese on 07/29/11 at 05:14 PM Ah, the joy I feel when I see your name on the recently posted list. This is exquisite, Ken, as always. I agree with Alison about the "wonder" line, but it's all beautiful. |

| Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 08/01/11 at 12:51 PM I agree with Joan on the execution, and also with Alison and Kristine on the lines in S4. It says just enough for me, and easily applies to my own life. Cool poem Ken. |
