Father taught me how to play chess

by Timothy Wilson

I am the black king
You are the white king
My rooks are wit
My queen is wisdom
My pawns are self-doubt
But who needs those little guys anyway
My knights are persistence
My Castles are stamina
My strategy is forgiveness

White king,
Your rooks are deceit
Your queen is control
Your knights are narrow-mindedness
Your castles are misery
And your pawns are arrogance

The board is life
And I won
Checkmate

Author's Note: About how forgiving my father has rid him of his control over me.

Nice, I would hope my children will also check mate me. Nice poem about stopping the cycle. At least that how I see it. Write on

Well done. Chess is so brutal - a great game to use for this metaphor.

Chess is VERY brutal and forgiveness is one of the most liberating things we can do for ourselves, yet one of the most confining we can do (in many ways) for the person who hurt us; kudos to you for forgiving AND writing this awesome poem about it.

Fantastic. Most of all at the end.

Yeah, totally agree that forgiveness is much more about our inner condition than something we "grant" to one another. I needed to forgive my mother because NOT forgiving her made me ill. It opened all sorts of doors. Opened doors look good on you, Timothy.

Nicely put Tim. Excellent use of extended metaphor. As a life long chess player, I really enjoyed how you expressed the personal situation here between you and your father.
