TATS

by Ken Harnisch

Ah, so the one with Adam and the Apple is
The new one, burned into your upper back.
And the one on your inner thigh, which I’m
Not yet allowed to see, is the Serpent.
Well, a snake seems artistically fitting to me.

The one that curves over your right breast
Is the rose, I suppose. While the one on your hip,
Just above your panty line: let me guess, that’s the
Dragon you had them etch after “Game of Thrones.”
And yeah, I know about the butterfly on your…well

And I get the one you’re doing for the new guy, the image
On the album cover of “Sticky Fingers.” I can
Even see the artistic merit to putting the Playboy
Bunny on the nape of your neck. It’s a Where’s Waldo
For any intrepid nuzzler you might pick up in a bar.

But no thanks. You remember how much trouble I had
To go through having “Rosalita” removed from my hairy chest
A few weeks before I married Jane. And while she likes
The USMC on my…well, so far I haven’t had to explain that
It doesn’t mean United States Marine Corps. Let’s leave it at that.

As somone who prefers variety, and clean skin, I've never understood the rationale and culture of TATS. Well stated, excellent wry humour also Ken.

Fun pome, my friend. I like the way you blended the experience with your fertile imagination and the humor was delightful. Most old faded tats are not attractive, especially on hairy old men. Although it might be interesting to poeticize about the history involved... like your USMC... But I find myself ambivalent when I see a well and artistically done tat on young people. I admire the skill of the artist, but wonder what will be in ten years when the individual's life has really changed finding their butts in a chair across from a boss about to interview them for an important and well-paid "position." Really enjoyed this, Ken.

Quick, witty but with a sharp, profound observational tone throughout. Good stuff indeed.
