Surfacing (R & R)

by Timothy Wilson

Two friends caught sight of me drowning in me
They reached in arm’s length trying to salvage anything sane
We packed our bags, we headed south
Drinking in the car, counting volts wagons on the highway
Submerged in my favorite song pumping loud filling the back seat

Two friends took me to my favorite neon lights
We danced, smoked cigarettes, and slept in passed check-out
The twisting in my stomach was an old friend resurfacing
The familiarity made me dizzy with disgust

Three friends laughed and joked and fried in spas
We took great pictures of ourselves looking awful
I laughed, beginning to surface
Two friends saved my life one friend breathed relief
While surfacing

I love that last stanza. Great stuff, man.
