Mayday Ennui by Ken HarnischFading afternoon
Gunmetal skies
Humidity heavy as a bath towel
Not the kind of day
To be thinking poetic thoughts
Or of the people who inspire them
Sluggish carousels
Ambling pedestrians
Everything down to thirty- three and a third
I turn on the big TV
Looking for salvation in a Yankee game
And find out A-Rod has tired legs
Feeling scatterbrained
Sword unsharpened
My favorite books no respite in the sun
Even the neighbor’s daughters
Don’t look as lovely
As they did on Saturday
Being exasperated
Scared and frustrated
Watching the cops load an SUV onto a flatbed
The propane unexploded
The clocks not ticking and the fireworks fizzling,
Just as they always seem to do
Cheers flickering
Beers opened
Knowing I was in Times Square
Yesterday afternoon
And like all good New Yorkers
Ever watchful, trusting no one
Jesus, but sometimes it’s a grind

| Posted by Kate Demeree on 05/11/10 at 02:12 AM There is such wealth of feeling here, as if your very soul hurts at times. Great poetry as always Poetman... but it makes me feel very meloncholy. |
