Grandpa by Amanda BullingtonOh, those days when you were young
And in love, surrounded by your proud horses,
Hatching chickens, white kittens, and singing parakeets,
Your German Shepherds, and those salt-water fish
The likes of which my mother could never keep.
Your musty, ancient books were stowed throughout the farmhouse,
Marked up with underlines and philosophical questions the way you liked them.
Dark mahogany tables gathered dust from all corners of the world
As you unfurled more and more artifacts from your travels.
Most memorable of all were the grand piano
And African tribal chess set with wooden giraffes in the place of horses,
The tools of learning you used to inspire decades of children and grandchildren.
At heart you were a man of science and wisdom, philosophy and reason,
Born just as easily from the ancient Greeka as from the modern day.
