Smiley

by Genevieve Sturrock

you ask me
why i always
smile

i smile
because
i'm happy

i smile
to offer
comfort and
support

i smile
to exude
confidence
and charm

i smile
to soothe
those who
are upset

i smile
to hide
my fear and
discomfort

i smile
to mask
the pain
and sorrow

i smile
to cover
the seething
mass of anger
that boils
within

i smile
until my
eyes are
permanently
wrinkled
the muscles
in my cheeks
strain with
exhaustion
my emotions
strung tighter
than piano wire

and then
i snap

Author's Note: i was dubbed 'smiley' in basic training and have recently been given that moniker again. it seems when i am pushed past the point of personal comfort, i smile. it's the lube that keeps the gears in my life from grinding to a painful halt.

No shame in that. Or in this.
