Square Peg

by Genevieve Sturrock

there is a hole
by definition
empty and void
and, as most
tend to think
of these things,
it's probably
round

it developed
around the time
i realized
that holding on
would hurt you
more than if
i just let go
and you slipped,
or, to be honest, fled
rather quickly
and decisively,
through my fingers

in your haste
you didn't quite
sever all the ties
rather than
cutting them cleanly,
you just pulled
and pulled and pulled
until the very essence
of you was ripped
from me
leaving this
rather painful
empty hole
the round one
i mentioned before

and now when we
come together
i notice you've
developed an edge
or two
quite sharp
and i believe
you've grown
perhaps you
think that by
doing so
you can deny
this hole
is yours

but, baby,
i got news
for you
square peg or not
this hole will
always be
your home

Very nice use of metaphor, especially in the way you lock it up at the end. Hits home in style.
