The Waves

by David Garner

I see you as a little girl:
long dark hair and not a curl
dancing through the living room
the kitchen and the dining room
the front yard and the family room
the back yard and your own bedroom
spinning twirling through every room

but
also in your mother’s womb.
yes even when the dancing then
was never seen by us
you were dancing cell division
embryo
umbilicus.

placenta pirouettes I know
fetus flowing in the flow.

extended splits
and then the kicks
Staccato steps in uterus.

arms and legs and eyelids forming
what’s this what’s that
what’s here what’s there my head my toes
my lips my nose
come on and what’s the pay off?
this is skin and that is blood and this is hair and chaos.

but oh and whoah and
this is God
and oh and whoah and
I’m a miracle
so oh and whoah and
this is lyrical.

I am well inside these walls
these walls and halls of
stillness.

sanctuary way back when
studio even then

conception
from conception
you decided to be a girl
with long dark hair and not a curl
so you could see the straight and narrow
and bend the rules and twist the arrow
to remind you of your curly craves
and return again to the dancing waves

the waves
the waves
the waves
before the womb…
