Whisper

by Uriel Tovar

we'll see when
you'll come around again.
maybe green grass can
line the sidewalk
with its
freshly cut smell still
lingering
in the
breeze.

hope
hangs around
like that--
a band aid
left on so
the wound won't scar
but happy endings
are
left inside
on the kitchen counter
along with a history book
which won't be read
in time for the test.

but i'll still smile
even tears
drop
faster than
rain in april
because
i can still hear your whispers
in my locker.

Simple, but sharply effective and even haunting in its own way. I especially like the opening of the second stanza.
