Under the Christmas Tree by Ken HarnischI see you lurking in the cyber-shadows
Your screen name taunting me
And I’m wondering what would
It take just to say hello?
We could talk about the weather
Or your job, which I always
Found fascinating, but as we would
Just skate on by the rest
I kind of think
It’s better just to wonder
Of course, we all rationalize
And I am thinking this resolve
Is evidence of the brand new
Me, who used to shake like pudding and
Cave to your softest and wildest
Demands. You gave me to others
As if I were a gift you owned to give
But…I went all too willingly
Under the Christmas tree
Saying I regret all that
Is only words. You have a
Talent for exposing the darker
Side of poets and other men
And once again a weakness
I thought defeated reveals
Itself to be as persistent
As tomorrow.
I will work on that,
While wondering if
You, stripping the layers
Off the men you meet
With a sad aplomb,
Are as adept at
Sanding down your own.
Because these are the dialogues
We need to have, and won’t,
I leave you lurking,
Unaddressed,
Knowing you know I am seeing you. 08/28/2008 Posted on 08/28/2008 Copyright © 2025 Ken Harnisch

| Posted by George Hoerner on 08/28/08 at 03:49 PM I like it a lot. And it is a rare man that can peel a woman as she can us. I love the words 'persistent as tomorrow'. Well done. |
