I Was Perfectly Content

by Genevieve Sturrock

immersed in fiction
the day's activity
temporarily forgotten
child tucked in snug
puppy snoring at my feet
i was perfectly content

then you come in
turning off lights
popping in a movie
disrupting my nest
of pillows on the sofa

ice cream sundae
in one hand
glass of shiraz
in the other
a brief pressing
of warm lips
against mine

and i realized
content is not
nearly as perfect
as blissfully
pampered
