The Ache in Your Sweet Tooth

by Genevieve Sturrock

i am the white stuff in an oreo
sweet and light
slightly questionable
adding a creamy, smooth texture
to the dry, slightly bitter taste
of the surrounding chocolate biscuits
i hold my own when pressed
crumbling the dark barriers
long before yeilding
yet, unable to withstand the stress
of being pulled in opposite directions
i shred and leave pieces of myself
all over the place
leaning haphazardly into space
temptingly vulnerable
i coat your tongue and teeth
with a slick, sugary film
that cannot be washed away
with hot coffe or cold milk
lingering in dark recesses of your mouth
sweet pockets found
by the tip of
your probing tongue
a pleasant memory
teasingly tormenting
long after
the last
crumb has gone

Author's Note: some experiences in life are short, brittle and bitter...it's good to linger over the sweet spots when you find them.

I'll never look at eating a biscuit in the same light again. Brilliant
