Skimming the Surface

by Genevieve Sturrock

if i were
to apologize
would it
make any
difference

would it
alter your
perception
of me
in any way

i am sorry
truly and
deeply
sorry

i am sorry
that i
did not
live up
to your
ideals

i am sorry
that i
had a
mind of
my own

i am sorry
that you
were not
the most
important
feature
of my life

i am sorry
that you
never
saw me
never
really
knew who
i was

but mostly
i am sorry
that i didn't
really
know you
before
saying
yes

your cover
is just
so much
deeper
than
your
book

Author's Note: our perceptions of others often overshadow their reality. what a mess we make when we judge others by our perceptions rather than their actuality.

What a powerful gut wrenching piece of work this is Genevieve. And excellent update/usage of the "don't judge a book by its cover" analogy.

...your cover is so much deeper than your book...yikes, what a delightful sight, i eat this whole work...it is darting in its jabs at all humanity[in my perception] but our life consists of a finite number and so, i joy and woes come from those who intangel themselves w/ us, and/or versa vice, eh? wonderfull, telling write, charlie
