There Are Lulls Now

by Ken Harnisch

There are lulls now
In the conversations
We have that we both stumble at
In great alarm, to fill with the
Putty of day-to-day inanities

So we talk of the weather
And the economy and the election
As if any worldly thing bigger
Than ourselves can reduce this
 Pain to some nano-particle
That makes it all stop hurting.

Time has not been kind to us
And mere longetivity has not
Aged us like the grape into
Some vintage worth savoring
Or even sipping on the patio

Sometimes you will smile
And remind me when I
Was quite the chaser of ghosts
And you were the loveliest
Apparition I ever tried to snare

I was unsuccessful in that, as we
Both knew I would be. But having
Caught you, I now see the
Pursuit of you was more exciting
Than the capture, in the end

There is no blame to be apportioned here
You drove out spirits in my soul far blacker
Than any I ever told a soul. In doing so, you
Helped me see that the heart can take just so
Much haunting before it needs to rest

The lulls are not of our design
I think we both would love to
Take this argument to bed, and there,
Tangled in the sheets, end the confusion
But the lulls won’t let us, being loud as hurricanes

This poem is so sad because I know that is how it is for many people. A perfectly bittersweet write, Ken. xoxo
