Unveiled

by Genevieve Sturrock

i apologize for the shock
for i know you thought you knew me
i intentionally shifted your attention
lured your thoughts away from
the truth that was right in front of you
but the mask is too heavy
the fascade crumbling from the inside

i am so sorry for your confusion
for i know i hid myself from you
in the hopes that you would
never look past the lovely wrappings
to discover the worm-eaten core
that is me

i know how harshly you judge
those around you who fail
to meet your ideals
but i am tired of pretending
of maintaining a banal smile
acting like i actually give a damn
what you think of my faults

i used to care, i really did
but lately i just want to hold
your face between my hands
and tell you to fuck off

Now don't you feel better? I do. Thanks.
