Writing Don't Pay the Bills by Genevieve Sturrock'where ya been,' he asks
as i slide into my usual chair
at the table in the shadows
just off stage
great view of the action
while avoiding the spotlight
'not here,' i reply
i scan the room, looking for the regulars
who hangout in this shady watering hole
there's the pretty redhead
sitting at the bar and crying
over the love of her life
there's the fat girl, at the center table
being loud and hoping noone will notice she's boring
and the crazy guy who's rants make you laugh
even as your skin crawls to get away from him
'soldier boy made it home,' he says
'in time for the baby?' i ask
he nods and i smile at the news
'so, where ya been,' he asks again
wiping down my table
with a the same old rag
he sets down the same chipped wine glass
filled with the same cheap red i like so much
'not here,' i sigh
taking a sip while avoiding his eyes
don't want him to know
i've been frequenting another
shady watering hole
down the street
they serve me whiskey
and don't ask questions 03/10/2008 Author's Note: my muse has led me away from writing for a while. i've missed it. turns out i'm an artist and people actually like my work...who knew? not me, that's for damned sure! my muse is a fickle thing and i never know where he'll lead me next.

| Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 03/11/08 at 05:56 AM Wow--I love the analogy--that's the way I take this poem... (your note helps)... the writing bar and the art bar... (you've been over at the art gallery for a while) but back here you're jotting it all down. There's humor and atmosphere... and it makes me want to see those pictures on the wall! |

Brilliant closure. The descriptions are very image-provoking. I'd like to read a scene from the new 'scene'
And, as Renda Writer would say: "Support the scene, or there will be no scene to support!" |
