Two Matadors

by David Garner

There's a matador
lying on the floor
in a pool of blood
and that's no bull

There's another matador
running in his cape
and he's smiling
because he just escaped

but he's bleeding more
than he really thinks
and that's no bull

First of all... I hear "metaphors" in "matadors". Is it me... or is it you... I think it's both. "And that's no bull." I love the linguistic subtle play, the display as if with a red cape... of the variations on "bull". The "running" matador the's "escaped" "smiling"-- at this point there is a depth of saddness and regret... in this human's experience. Excellent introspective view of action (and all in public view--as such fights are)-- the "bull" being the important, reflective mirror... the focus, even when it's not.
