I Can Count on You

by David Garner

I can count on you
to disappear.

When I need you most,
"I am out of here,"

you say to me,
which leads me to

believe in trust,
but not in you.

I believe in
give and take and give.

I believe two lives
as one can live

without ignoring
a sense of self

a good head and
a heart and health.

I believe in this.

I can count on you
to disapprove.

When I come in close,
you always move

away from me,
which leads me to

believe in love,
but not in you.

I believe in
kiss and hug and kiss.

I believe love though
is hit or miss.

You close your eyes,
and then it's gone.

It's off one day.
And then it's on.

I believe in this.

I love the "which leads me to believe in (this but not that)" lines. They are profound. It's so difficult to imagine permanence where there is such contradiction. Very nicely written.

This one only takes the title and first line and then we sink into the meaning of ther poem... it too is songful and has the feeling of clarity gained (sadly) from experience. The fact of believing in "love" as "hit or miss" "off one day and then it's on" --this is a fine contrast and odd resolutuion... the rhyme at the end is very satisfying as it is such a clear realization, like solving an equation...(sigh)

Nice, simple words and a wonderful rhythm. I really enjoyed this. :)
