On the Edge of Shore by David Garneron the edge of shore
sun leather skin
cracks and burns
even in complete stillness
I am a turtle in this skinsheet
save me bamboo save me
I turn to salt-covered wounds
and inspect their designs
and witness coconut meat
attempting to take on previously undiscovered healing qualities
work it white flesh work it
I hallucinate dainty cookies
with lavender icing and tiny balls made of silver sugar
I used to hate crumbs but now I crave crumbs
I need their nuisance and their floured stubble
fix it white sugar fix it

| Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 11/29/07 at 08:54 AM Such a delight to find this potd... and one that I had missed! Delicate, intense introspection and observance, unusual language, microcosmic sensuousness as if the thin layer that covers consciousness is peeled off. We enter the physical experience of turtle, the peeling and healing of skin and dried cracked intricacy of dry sand... I love the "work it" and "fix it" of this... no one else would say this but you, I feel. Unusual, fascinating imagery that is unforgettable. And when I read the delightful "I need their nuisance" --every time I want to read "nuance" because this poem is so rich in that, in fact all your writing is, which makes it such a joy, and always on the fine "edge" of creativity! |
| Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 11/29/07 at 05:05 PM I love "I am a turtle in this skinsheet". This is a fascinating little poem - I am at once on the shore literally and in some interesting corner of your mind. The language here is unique - Your "save me".... "work it"... and "fix it"... just tickle me for some reason. I want to see more of the salt-covered wound designs. I, too, keep wanting to substitute "nuance" for "nuisance" - tells you how my mind works. This is a fine POTD!! I think the words "floured stubble" is going to stay with me all day.
