Renovation Insurrection

by Genevieve Sturrock

a water leak
snuck in and
weakened our
supports
but we,
being diligent
home owners,
discovered
it quickly
and tackled
the situation
with toolbelts
tightly cinched
and reference books
handy

damage was assessed
and a plan of
action laid out
all went accordingly
we rescued the
wounded flooring
shoring up
those areas
that threatened
to give way

that first wave
of attack
didn't take
very long
and with
visions of
tiled floors
and fresh paint
dancing in
our heads
we looked forward
to a hot shower
at the end of
that first long night

we reset the
water heater
and waited
toasting
each other
for our
cleverness

but the
water heater...

...didn't

and it
was then
that the
pieces all
fell in place

the initial
damage
was done
by that
insufferable
tank and
we are now
locked
in a
full house
mutiny

as i stand
shivering
from my
cold shower
i refuse
to show
any sign
of weakness

for we
will
prevail

home improvement veterans unite!
this nasty old house
will not win this fight!

viva renovationers!

Author's Note: no kitchen, no washer/dryer, no hot water...it's a hardship tour for sure and the first battle ended in a draw.
