She Tries Too Hard

by Genevieve Sturrock

she wants to
shimmer and shine
like a shooting star
but she is awkward
and ungainly
fettered by
her own dark
thoughts
which she
tries to disguise
behind a
garishly bright
smile and
forced laughter
leaving her
onlookers
feeling raw
abraded
and exhausted

Well written description of people I have known - definitely exhausting - how does one help them to relax with themselves?

Doesn't "she" realize that this is EXACTLY the way shooting stars look at different points of their blazing journey through the skies? :-) You must tell her!!!

Abraided, perhaps? But I do know/have met women like this yes, and they are truly exhausting. Lethal when combined with charm.

this one so aptly describes the masks so many wear... all the while deceiving even themselves.. well done.. aloha

my favorite part of this poem is the fact that watching someone pretend to be something they're not is extremely exhausting, and you captured that. a fake smile is like a small flame...who knows how long it can last until it burns out and we all see what lies in the ashes and remains? strong, pretty in a kind of fragile way and pointed. fine stuff gs.
