Well Begun and Halfway Done

by Genevieve Sturrock

i am not a sculptor
and have never
wanted to be
but i was given
this formless mass
and tasked to make
it beautiful

i planned and schemed
and balked and waited
hoping against hope
that someone else
would do it for me
but, alas, the task
remained and the
longer i put it off
the larger it became

so without a clue
as to what i was doing
i jumped in and started
to work, boldy digging in
shaving a little bit here
gouging out a chunk there
looking for the image
hidden within

it has taken months
of hard work
focus and energy
time away from other
more enticing endeavors
blisters and blood
sweat and tears
muscles shaking
from the effort
to transform this mass
into a sculpture of beauty

i am only partway done
but i can see the
finished image just
under the surface
a shadow of structure
lies beneath this thinning
layer of softness
and i can almost reach it
almost define it,
i want to bring it out
to show the world
what i see inside

but for today i will
sit back and admire
my hard work
smiling in satisfaction
as i wipe the sweat from
my face, knowing that
soon i will be beautiful

Dearest Genevieve, this is so lovely - your artists heart is pulsing through your fingers giving life to an image that is divine. You are beautiful in all mediums...you're beautiful in life.

gen, you are truly one of the most beautiful people i know - you have a lovely heart and you have a beautiful smile, your beauty runs deep because it comes from the inside-out :)

I love this poem and can relate to it in so many areas. Beautiful depth and genuineness pour from every movement of your pen. Yes, you are beautiful!

Such a strong, positive progression in this poem. I have real admiration for a scuptor's talents, and doubly so for someone who takes on the task of re-shaping themselves. Keep it up!!

Wow, yeah that is a great write, it drew me in and captured me. I didn't want it to end but wanted to know how it ended lol and what and ending! Beautiful.

Beautiful, and beautifully formed. In the reading I really identified with the "mass" as --personality-- or the life given itself --- and felt it was a years-long project rather than months... but your more immediate goal though hard work too... (not so hard as becoming, realizing who we can be in general, but related) ..strenuous and good! Excellent poem.

...genevieve, when you get thru, i'll show you mine if you show me yours...i love the de milo images you bring forth...we all are a piece...of art, eh? love the spoken-unspoken...good poetics always "at work" ...on ourselves...peace, chaz

You may not be Venus de Milo, but yes, you are beautiful and encouraging. Wonderfully told. Thank you so much for telling about your efforts to whittle yourself away to get in sexy, skinny clothes. Yay for you!

Amorphous metamorphosis? Anatomical metphorisation is obviously the write stuff here...

This is so inspirational -- I've just begun my own fitness challenge; I'm printing it out so I can read it every morning! Beautiful work-- and good luck! -maria.
