You See More

by Genevieve Sturrock

when i look at myself
all i see are the
many and varied ways
i fail to meet the
bar of mediocrity

less than average
in looks and build
maybe slightly more
in intelligence
and talent

my heart beats strong
but dark with hidden
passions and desires
that even i won't
dare to admit

but you tell me
i'm wrong and
that i shine
brighter than
the stars

you bask in my love
and look at me with
eyes so full of
adoration that i
shrink away in shame

and i think that
maybe you are
wearing those
dark shades that
blind men use

for my light doesn't
shine, shimmer or glow
it flares brightly
then quickly fades like
one of those cheap
glow in the dark rings

but you insist
that i am more
and so i ask
let me borrow
your eyes

so i can see
if just for a moment
why you would
waste your time
looking at me

"...and so i ask let me borrow your eyes so i can see if just for a moment why you would waste your time looking at me" 'Nough said, that made the whole poem for me. Brilliant!

such a beautiful, heartfelt piece.. it is always strange to be seen through the eyes of a lover because they often see things we do not see, and they see our heart and our spirit, things we often hope are seen but doubt...
