for a creature that i am fond of

by Corey Lockaby

she lay on the carpet
motionless asleep

black and shining like
a t-model ford

maybe 20 years

at least, certainly older than me

i heard a frustrated groan emerge
from her cleft palate
alien throat

nobody could say with words
what she dreams
but i know it's the unwanted other
an intruder to her once-peaceful abode

even within her dreams, haunting her
winding the clock for her death
so long pending

she is still beautiful, even in pain
her green eyes still flash with
keen understanding

she is more than equal
shining, breathing, moving easily and calculated

i fear that i will miss her.
