Waffle Passion

by Genevieve Sturrock

sun is rising, bellies rumbling
it's time to feed the masses
something good and filling
to get them through their classes

cereal's too cold, she moans
i want something hot

oatmeal? gross! how about cheese toast?
mom, what else have you got?

want some grits? no way, he says
bacon? sausage? scrambled eggs?
not today, they brightly say
what DO you want? she begs

waffles! waffles! come the shouts
hot and crisp and yummy

frozen good? no, from scratch!
And baby pats his tummy

wistful eyes as mother sighs
and she surrenders, laughin'
not much to do when the whole crew
gets the waffle passion!

Author's Note: First and foremost, my profound apologies to Mike McConnell! His wonderful poem titled, Waffled Passion, brought to mind the mornings my kids beg for their favorite. A big heartfelt thanks to Reggie Foote and Mike McConnell for all the help in figuring out HTML coding.

A fine stack of waffles you have made here... and with such good humor. I love the concept and the title of..."Waffle Passion"-- and it is interesting how words can topple in our minds one way or another-- Mikes poem having nothing to do with waffles... but firing up the waffle iron in yours. Lucky family to have such a poetic and skilled waffle maker.

mmmm... waffles sound good right now :) this is fun piece and you've described the morning very well, putting the reader right there in your kitchen!

Hi Genevieve, This is great, I love it. It's on my favorites list. This is so adorable, so cute and loving. So precious. I love waffles, specially blueberry. I'ld love to be in your kitchen in the mornings and see and hear it all. It sounds like musci to your ears. It would be for me. :)

What a ride! I loved this when I first read it a couple months back. I got hungry then. I am hungry now - for waffles.
