Perfectionism

by Genevieve Sturrock

oh, i know i'm not perfect
my failures slap me in the face
everywhere i look

i was taught
'if you're going to do something
do it right'

and
'you can do anything
you "want" to'

and
'you can do better
just try'

so when i set my mind
to a task
it's not enough to
'just do it'

it must be done
and done well
perfect

every flaw is
proof of my
failure
to do
my best

perfectionism
is a disease
and oh how
i suffer

Author's Note: over-achieving parents often have under-achieving kids...growing up shouldn't be a pressure cooker

When I was growing up my dad would have me mow the lawn and I knew he would look at it with a critical eye. So I would mow it three times thinking then he would have nothing to complain about. Then he would mow it again saying "Is that the that the best you can do?" What ever I did was never good enough. He made me a perfectionist. Good poem Gene....Charlie

Reading through your poem, I was struck with how true your comments are. Additionally, when the parents give to much to their children, whether it be material things or lifting the load of responsibility, they end up cultivating under achievers as well.. wonder why that happens? exactly...-)
