Father

by Uriel Tovar

we would have walked forever
if our knees didn't give out
under the weight of our thoughts
dragging behind us--gathering mud

I wore his shoes but
walked the same and
then I wore his hat...

There is so much depth and emotion in that first stanza. I've read it and reread it over a few times and each time, it gets heavier. The promise in that first line is just overflowing and then we have the "if only" sentiment. Bittersweet and very well done.
