[Outbursts] Immersion

by Nikki Rice

We've surrounded ourselves so thickly with the cover of the familiar and comfortable; a cocoon of the like. It seems we almost forget that there are others, in their own bubbles... like two way mirrors, what we see is so different - we perceive danger, coldness and blind eyes of steel while they see the outcasts screaming for attention through their lifestyles and hair colors and, worst of all, apathy. To you they did not exist, so far in the corner of your mind that their presence is rarely considered or acknowledged... you worked your ass off to make it happen that way.

And then there they are, where history extends its bony fingers to caress the plump hand of future. Like leprosy, the disease crawls from one to the other, contaminating all that you've made sacred; all that you've bled for. A familiar (and still disturbing) twist crushes your confidence and you hope, wish, insist (dare I say, pray?) for the mind to overcome.

Over and over until you're set to puree, that is when you realize what immersion truly means; it is not surrounding yourself with expensive prints on your wall and prestigious directors on your shelf and the perfect curling of cigarette smoke from your lips... you have willingly held your own head under water and accepted with indescribable gratefulness the water in your lungs; filled to capacity.
