SEPARATION

by Terry Olynik

You lie beside me now
With your giving skin against mine,
Your hair rivulets across my pillow.
I study your closed eyes
And parted lips
With a jealous and fearing gaze -
For at such times,
You are most distant from me,
My gentle one.
In the day's bold light
We are as one -
Safely enclosed in each other's love.
But when the sun's eye closes
You come to lie here beside me.
And I realize
In the freeing darkness
You are no longer mine.
In your possessing sleep,
You travel
Where I am unable to follow -
Rambling for the duration
Of the moon's supremacy,
Through meadows and forests of emerald
Free from my gaze,
Liberated from my arms.
Of your singular journeys,
You never speak.
What secrets do you keep
While under the watch of Sleep
(Daughter of Death)?
Oh, but look....
Your eyes are open.
Smiling,
You have returned.

a good flow to this one...and an interesting idea...perhaps you are with her even in dreams?
