cricket in the yard

by Corey Lockaby

shh
listen out for the silence

the stars aren't whispering
i don't think a single
cricket in the yard
is lonely tonight

because for an hour,
everything's been quiet
it might be a hymn

except
not a song,
but a hug
to comfort our worried hearts and dizzy heads,

it's a promise... yours to keep and say

shh
listen out for the silence
it's telling us what we need to know

Author's Note: Actually, this one came out like I had wanted. I liked it a lot better after I left it and came back to it.

I feel relaxed just reading this. Amazingly, they have crickets out here in Afghanistan. I didn't think of them as comforting until now.
