Fruitless attempts to change the day

by Omi Salavea

Waking up.
-------------------

Waking up, to a different day,
than what you thought would be the next
Or last...
Dry breaths catch in your throat, as
you realize it is a raw tunnel of pain.
Too weary to move, yet trembling with shakes
You're afraid to open your eyes, so you don't.
The nerves in your swollen arms reflex to trigger your hands,
and you feel a needle within your skin.
You smell vomit, making you sick, and you realize it is your own body that smells that way.
Now you have to open your eyes.
You wake in a curtained off section of ER,
to your father's desperate face and your stepmother's angered tears
You family doctor jots away in pen scribbles, and your therapist grasps your hand.
They all look more pained than you feel,
though this was something you've done to yourself, not them.
You woke to a new day, though you didn't want to wake at all.
You wake to a new day, though your mind slowly grows back the hurt you felt before this day.
You woke to a new day, a scary new day to make mistakes, make a new life, make the decisions that change the course of life.
You wake to a new day, as your eyes slowly blink, a nurse taps your IV, checks the siphon clamp, and goes on to check other patients on her shift.
It's just another day to her.
