Trousseau for Fall

by Maureen Glaude

the evening campfire's
whirr, hiss, cackle
setting flames to kindling
then the hardwood,
maple, ash,
aspen, birch
pyramid-stacked to toast
the night chills

in farewell to August
Old Earth's outspread
the silken lake, foliage, limb and acorn
her finest linens and laces fluttering;
an early-turned leaf at my feet

Author's Note: Published by Sasquatch Writers Performance Series in my broadsheet, Treading Earth, 2002 and dedicated to my daughter Valerie, who loved to make the campfire every summer, with my husband, right from choosing the wood to chopping and stacking it just right.

Simply wonderful. My favorite time of year soon arrived...September to mid October. Thanks for the moving reminder!

This is so beautiful. The colors and the feel of it lead me to my favorite time of year. Thanks so much for sharing.
