Sparkle

by Aaron Howard

A sparkle in your eyes,
A smile and a hidden surprise
A smoking room and a sunbeam
Leaving my heart like a forgotten scream
A hug that was too fake to accept
while your body bounced another check.
A note too blue to be heard by my heart,
A question of where to start
You planned this to fail from the start,
except you didn't want me to bring my heart.
So what gives you the right to lie to me?
Am I just too damn blind to see?
Am I just your slave to break,
or am I just your goodness sake?
So all I see is that sparkle and smile as you dig that pile
Your silver shovel just flinging it, while you lie to me with a smile.
