Girl in a Painting

by S.J. Tyler

last night I painted
a girl
but I don’t know where she came from
she just appeared
out of random tendrils
of orange
on my page

the watercolors blended
from vermilion to lemon yellow
with a thousand shades in between
giving her cheek an abnormal hue
though there was some blush in her cheeks
that came from some crimson
that came from somewhere else

I had been painting abstractly
but there she stood
facing my left hand
with her mouth open
as if she were blowing
rings of seductive perfume
to be caught in my hand
and brought to my nose
sniffed until I am dizzy from the fumes

then my brush woke up
and suddenly cobalt rings
came from her lips
and my hand didn’t remember painting a thing

abstractness now took a form
this form I could see and understand
and now this mystery girl
closes her eyes
and her multicolored hair
flies and curls
in the wind from her own throat
like some goddess
because that is who she must be
to have willed herself
onto my page
causing the mixture of colors
I did not have on my palette

causing me to love
an image
i don’t remember creating
