Holo Me

by S.J. Tyler

I have magic powers
I can change the consistency of a room
that felt rosy, warm,
sweet
and fulfilling
to a desolate, beige,
cold, tasteless rock
with fluorescent signs on top of the cliff
saying, “You are not welcome!”
“Leave before I force you to.”

a trick of the mind
a trick of my voice
you followed a siren here
but she became a non-snarling, indifferent
puddle of jell-o
hearing what you had to say
and bouncing back the appropriate response
with no sentiment
barely even a coating of gelatin
to show you that she gave you
even a drop of herself

like a spell
a simple room
is a vessel for airborne emotions
that can change from passionate, loving pink
to a frozen white
a barren white
a winter hell
you won’t be able to remember why you came in the first place
did you imagine emotion?
it was a mirage
created by my attitude
like breathing out and letting more carbon dioxide into the air
instead I exhale a poison
for which the only antidote is stumbling out the door
