All We Can Do

is hope to be able to
be someone
or not really someone
we can choose and go
or not follow
the ebb and flow
of those that we know
will lead us to a low
and we can slide by
the shore that we walk
and we can talk talk
with whoever we walk with
we can die to speak
we can try to tweak
we can run into the river
wish that time would wait a sliver
while were wet, and drip and shiver
so our lips can leak
we can spread our faith
or give each other space
instead of trying to place
in the race against our race
you can look at my face
and listen to me say
that Ill only try to play
the game thats good for me today
I wont cower away
when its over and done with
I wont leave you dry
let you wish that you could die
because we can tie
for a place
in this race
when Im running I need space
but Ill give you all you need
if you promise not to weed
off my inherent lack of speed
I will let you speak
because thats all that I can do
just limit your words to a precious few
and you can do
whats good for you
because I will too
