Sleepy

by S.J. Tyler

Why am I so tired?
is it the heat that is encircling me?
if I slide out of my skin for a moment or two,
will it help?
or maybe it is a byproduct
of working and playing without rest
of sleeping without rest

my eyelids droop
this heat
or overworked weary
is pulling them down
but I fight hard
I still have so much to get down
and I don’t have time to break

two children in pale green
crocheted dresses walk by
with delicate white sweaters
slowly strolling
through the hot misty rain outside
they move on
blurry
slight

my mind is still reflecting on them
though they have passed several moments ago
my slow mind
startled
by the onset of roughhousing boys
bursting into my vision screen
out my window
forcing my brain to catch up to the new information
being thrust at it

I guess I had to be rudely awakened from my wistful daydreaming
I have so much work to do
