Summer Lake

by S.J. Tyler

Dip a toe
just plunge it in
a whole foot
a whole limb
feel warm waters and
deeper frigid cold
that feels so good
after just being told
to get out of the sun
for the temperature’s high
today’s rays are too strong,
that heat stroke can kill
if you sit there too long.

Go splash in the waters
of the lake in the shade,
where the rays can’t hit you
just the water she sprayed
when she came up for air
after jumping head on
into dark, cozy waters
chasing a toad that had gone
into the mud
for a cool summer bath
to get rid of his warts?
or to hide from her wrath?

She forgot the toad quickly
when she found us
pushed us into the water
no time to discuss
that we were only wading
still in our clothes
perfectly content
with just cooling our toes
but now we were soaked
there was no need to pretend
to be proper and prim
and let her laugh in the end.

We splashed in her face
so she tried to run
but we had only just started
at having our fun
then mother, we heard
hollered our names
“You boys are too big
to be playing such games.
Dry off in the sun.
Come now!” she spoke
I guess splashing and toads
are worse than heat stroke.
