a memory lost within your smile

by Cymbre Dolphay

We were playing tic-tac-toe
on the souls of my feet
and discussing how long it'd been
since that song was played on the radio
sounding so mournful
it was suspended beyond time

All this I remember so well
but not the way I felt
when you had kissed my cheek
after I had claimed to need sleep
my memory let that emotion slip away

Maybe my longing was overwhelmed
by the mere presence of you
that I dismissed your affection
in the smallest hopes
of more jokes about Suzy Q
